Hand carved Portland stone memorial by Martin Cook

This elegant hand carved Portland stone memorial by Martin Cook has deeply carved lettering and the relief carved symbol of ying and yang.  The hand carved memorial was designed by Martin Cook at the drawing board at his Buckinghamshire stone carving workshop.  A pencil drawn design was presented to the client after a personal consultation, once the drawing was approved the Portland stone was shaped by hand at the workshop.  An enlarged version of the original design is then drawn through onto the Portland stone and the intricate work of hand carving begins.  The deeply cut letters and relief carving are done to perfection using a hammer and chisel in the traditional method.

Martin comes from a long line of carvers dating  hundreds of years.  Martin has taken his skill and creativity beyond the making of memorials and also creates beautiful carved garden pieces and architectural lettering.

Martin Cook carves using natural British stone such as Welsh slate, Cumbrian slate, limestone and Portland stone.
